Yourself

 By Madison Erben

I know a girl

She pirouettes in the dark

Dancing like nobody’s watching

She leaps and jumps as if on a cloud

Shamelessly twirling

Without a care for who watches

Everyone’s eyes are drawn to her

It’s because she’s not afraid to be herself

I know a boy

He shoots hoops again and again

Jumping against all odds forever

He loves the game, you can see it in his eyes

But he never makes a shot

He doesn’t care, continuing his game

Everyone’s eyes are drawn to him

It’s because he’s not afraid to be himself

I know a girl

She tells her stories to anyone who’ll listen

Speaking her voice and being heard

They don’t make sense or follow reality

But she continues

Fabricating stories like one would sew

Everyone’s eyes are drawn to her

It’s because she’s not afraid to be herself

I know a boy

He plays a part in front of an audience

Acting a character and following his dreams

Changing emotions in a second

He bows to the crowd

Forgetting who he is for a minute in the thrill

Everyone’s eyes are drawn to him

It’s because he’s not afraid to be himself

I know a girl

She paints a picture with the stroke of a brush

Creating a scene out of blank canvas

Mixing colors and styles to finish a piece

She makes mistakes

And turns them into her own special masterpiece

Everyone’s eyes are drawn to her

It’s because she’s not afraid to be herself.

I know a boy

He bakes treats to share with the world

Watching the the flour and sugar fly

Knowing how to make the perfect swirl

He follows a recipe

Laughing as he fails and creates something new

Everyone’s eyes are drawn to him

It’s because he’s not afraid to be himself

I know a girl

She creates everything out of nothing and tries

Writing a story and helping others

Daring to reach further and climb higher

I’m not perfect

But I don’t have to be in the eyes of others

Everyone’s eyes are drawn to me

It’s because I’m not afraid to be myself
